STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Hartford men's and women's tennis teams dropped matches to a pair of America East opponents to wrap up regular season play Saturday. Both teams fell to Stony Brook and Binghamton, with all matches hosted by Stony Brook.
The Hawk men fell to both the Bearcats and Seawolves by 6-0 final scores. The Hartford women fell to the Bearcats, 7-0, before a 5-1 defeat against the host Seawolves. Both the men's and the women's teams agreed to forego doubles matches against the Seawolves due to impending inclement weather in the Stony Brook area.
The Hawk men battled against the defending America East champion Bearcats in doubles play as
Aneil Bhalla and
Josh Isaacson dropped an 8-5 decision in the top spot while
Marco Neves and
Michael Kennelly lost an 8-4 match at No. 2.
The Bearcats opened a wider margin in singles play, taking five of the six matches. The match at No. 2 singles between Bhalla and Binghamton's Ruben Devos, did not reach a decision due to the completion of the team match. Bhalla trailed by one set when the match was called.
The Hawks fared better against the Seawolves. Again playing at No. 2 singles, Bhalla fell behind Francis Bertrand after one set. However, the senior fought back to take the second set, 7-5, to force a superbreak. Bertrand outlasted Bhalla to take a 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 win in the match.
Isaacson had a strong showing from the No. 3 slot, pushing Roope Kailaheimo to tiebreaks in each of the two sets played before eventually falling by a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) score.
On the women's side, graduate student
Abby Liu her first set against Binghamton's No. 1, Jill Santos, 6-3. Santos came back to win the second set, 6-3, to force a superbreak. Santos outlasted Liu in the break, taking a 10-8 decision to win the match.
Sophomore
Ashley Harel took three games in the first set of her No. 2 singles match against the Bearcats, but fell by a final count of 6-3, 6-0.
Against the Seawolves, Liu dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Nini Lagvilava at No. 1 singles. At the No. 4 spot, senior
Haley Gileau won a total of three games in an eventual 6-2, 6-1 loss. The Hawks took a point at the No. 6 singles position by default.
The Hawk men and women now prepare for the upcoming America East Conference Championship. The championship is scheduled for April 27-29 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Seeding for the championship will be released later this week.
