FLUSHING, N.Y. – The University of Hartford men's and women's tennis teams dropped their quarterfinal matches at the 2012 America East Tennis Championships at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Friday afternoon. The men fell to Boston University, 4-2, while the women lost a 4-0 decision to Binghamton.
The men started out strong against the fourth-seeded Terriers, taking a 1-0 lead after a pair of doubles wins. Senior
Aneil Bhalla and junior
Josh Isaacson notched an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles while sophomore
Alex Holdstein and junior
Bogdan Nedelcu secured the point for the Hawks with an 8-2 triumph.
In singles play, Bhalla again proved victorious, taking a 6-4, 6-3, win at the No. 2 position. However, the Hawks were unable to tally another singles victory as the Terriers clinched a 4-2 match victory.
Isaacson held a one-set advantage, 6-4, 3-3, at No. 3 when his match was suspended.
The Hawk women, seeded No. 6 in the tournament, dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 3 Binghamton. The Bearcats won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 before the match at No. 1 doubles could be finished.
In singles play, Binghamton went on to earn wins at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 slots to take the match and advance to the semifinal round against No. 2 UMBC.
Graduate student
Abby Liu was in the first set of a battle with Binghamton's Jill Santos at the No. 1 singles position. Liu trailed, 4-5, in the opening set when the match was called due to a team result being reached.
Sophomore
Ashley Harel won a pair of games at the No. 2 spot before her match was suspended while freshman
Jessica Galik took three games in the first set at No. 5 singles. Galik's match was also suspended in the second set.
The women will continue play in Flushing, N.Y. in a consolation match against No. 5 Albany on Saturday morning.
