ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Playing in back-to-back matches on the second day of the 2012 season, the Hartford volleyball team finished with a split decision dropping a three-set (20-25, 22-25, 20-25) match to Nebraska-Omaha before scoring a four-set (25-6, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24) victory over the Norfolk State Spartans. Both matches closed out the 2012 Kristen Dickmann Memorial Tournament hosted by Navy.
The Hawks finish the 2012 Kristen Dickmann Memorial Tournament with a 1-2 overall record with a pair of sophomore named to the All-Tournament Team, Sareeta Nethersole and Jackie Tamburri.
For the day sophomore (Sareeta) Nethersole led all Hawks hitters with 19 kills, finishing with seven in the loss to Nebraska-Omaha and chipping in a team-best 12 in the win over the Spartans. Junior Taylor McCreery finished just behind Nethersole with 18 total kills, including a career-high 11 in the win over Norfolk State. She also finished that match with a .346 attack percentage with just two errors in 26 total swings.
In the opening match against Nebraska-Omaha, the Hawks hitting struggled at just .121 overall with 31 kills and 18 errors in 107 total attacks. Leading the Hawks in the first match of the day was senior Kami Nethersole who finished with eight kills and a .300 average with two errors in 20 attempts. Tamburri finished with 27 of the Hawks 31 total assists, while she completed her first double double of the season with 10 digs. (Sareeta) Nethersole led the Hawks defensively with 12 digs.
In the win over the Spartans, the Hawks opened up the match on fire with a .476 hitting average in the opening match, which included an errorless performance. Hartford finished that first set with 10 kills in 21 total attacks. For the match, the Hawks hit .293 overall with 44 kills and just 10 combined errors in 116 total attempts. (Sareeta) Nethersole and McCreery were the only Hawks who contributed double figure kills while junior Dionna Kirton finished just behind them with nine kills.
Tamburri finished the second match of the day with 39 assists, three less than the Hawks 42 total. (Sareeta) Nethersole led the Hawks on the defensive side with 15 digs, her second double double of the season. The Hawks defense also held the Spartans to a .098 hitting average with 46 kills and 32 errors in 143 total attacks.
Hartford returns to the Nutmeg State for their home opener on Wednesday night when they welcome the Central Connecticut Blue Devils to the Reich Family Pavilion. The Hawks and Blue Devils are scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
