WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Yale Bulldogs scored twice in the final 10 minutes, including the game-winner with 26 seconds remaining, to stun the Hartford women's soccer team 2-1 on Friday night for the Hawks first loss in 2012. Hartford falls to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs take the victory in their first game of the year.
A chip in from senior Amélia Pereira in the eighth minute put the home team on the scoreboard first. Pereira received a cross about one yard off the end line from classmate Caitlin Alves and was able to chip a shot over Yale keeper Adele Jackson-Gibson for her first tally in the young season.
Despite Hartford controlling tempo for much of the first half, the Bulldogs finished the first 45 minutes with a 4-3 advantage in shots, including forcing Hawks keeper Erin Quinlan to make the only stop of the half. The Bulldogs also led in corner kicks with a 6-1 advantage.
Neither team could muster momentum for the first 10 minutes of the second half until Hawks rookie Natasha Douglas managed a shot on goal in the 57th minutes, forcing Jackson-Gibson to make her first of two saves in the contest.
Yale's first shot in the second half led to the equalizing goal in the 81st minute with the Bulldogs working off their eighth corner kick of the night. The initial serve into the box off the corner kick was batted around among the offense and defense before an attempt at a shot reflected off a Hawks defender. With Quinlan diving at the ball, Ally Grossman was able to chip a shot over her and the defense for the Bulldogs first goal in 2012.
The Hawks had a good look at the net three minutes after the equalizing goal when Douglas began an offensive outburst that was eventually called back as an off sides attempt. The Hawks only other shot on goal in the second half came just before Yale's first goal with Pereira forcing Jackson-Gibson into action in the 79th minute.
With time ticking down in the final minute of the game, Kristen Forster received a pass from Paula Hagopian on her right and was able to score from three yards out past Quinlan's attempt at a stop.
Overall for the night, the Bulldogs finished with a 7-5 advantage in the shots column and a commanding 10-1 lead in corner kicks. Quinlan and Jackson-Gibson each finished with two saves, Quinlan making one in each half and Jackson-Gibson making a pair of stops in the second half.
The Hawks return to Alumni Stadium in less than 48 hours when they welcome the Saint Joseph's Hawks to West Hartford for their next game on Sunday afternoon (2:00 p.m.).
