LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman Javoni Simms once again scored the golden goal for the University of Hartford men's soccer team, this time reaching the back of the net in the 101st minute to propel the Hawks to a 1-0 triumph at Siena on Saturday afternoon. Extending their win-streak to a season-best three games, the Hawks improve their overall record to 5-3-0.
After suffering its third-straight loss, Siena falls to 2-4-0 on the season.
Three of Simms' team-best six goals this year have proven to be game-winning tallies as he lifted Hartford to a 1-0 win at Fordham on Aug. 31 and a 2-1 triumph at Penn last weekend. The reigning America East Rookie of the Week, he has netted a goal in each of the last four games.
The opening period was relatively quiet for Hartford's front line, which took just two shots and saw one go on goal. It was a different story for the Hawks' on the defensive side of the pitch, however, as Siena broke through their zone and blasted nine first half shots, generating seven corner kicks while forcing rookie keeper Viltsu Tuumi into action three times to preserve the scoreless first half.
Throughout the entire match, the Saints held the upperhand offensively, finishing with a commanding 15-4 advantage in shots, including a 5-0 blanking of the Hawks in the second stanza. The home team also held a 10-2 lead in corner kicks, but could not convert on any of those opportunities to force extra time between the two squads.
In the first extra session, each team had an opportunity to pound home the game-winner. Sindre Ek, the Saints' leading scorer, saw the first look in the 95th minute, but Tuumi punched out the attempt. Less than four minutes later on the other side of the pitch, Hawks rookie Anthony LoBello fired a shot on goal, but another overtime period would be needed to determine a winner after Damian Liesemann made the save for Siena.
Just 56 seconds into the second overtime period, a misplayed ball deep in the Saints' zone was deflected to Simms, who cashed in on the miscue after dribbling to the left corner of the box and beating Liesemann with a low shot to the far corner of the net.
Liesemann made two stops in goal for Siena while Tuumi picked up his second clean sheet of the season after finishing with four saves. Hartford advances to 3-1-1 all-time against Siena.
The Hawks look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday when they play host to the Quinnipiac Bobcats at 7:00 p.m., kicking off a two-game home stand for the squad. Both games will be broadcasted live on www.hartfordhawks.com All-Access.
