Hawks Soar to Fourth-Straight With 2-1 Win Over Quinnipiac

Box Score

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford men's soccer team made it four-in-a-row on Wednesday evening after defeating instate foe Quinnipiac by a 2-1 count at Alumni Stadium. Javoni Simms, a freshman forward, provided the game-winning tally late in the opening stanza to boost Hartford's overall record to 6-3-0 in 2012.

The Hawks will vie for their fifth-consecutive win on Saturday when they go up against Sacred Heart, their second straight opponent from Connecticut. The contest will be played under the lights of Al-Marzook Field with kick-off slated for 7:00 p.m.

All three of the evening's scores were netted in the opening stanza with Quinnipiac (2-4-0) drawing blood first on a goal by Philip Suprise seven minutes in. From 25-yards out, Suprise wound up, and rifled a shot towards the Hawks' zone. After the attempt deflected off a Hartford defender and changed its trajectory in the opposite direction of where Hartford goalkeeper Viltsu Tuumi was positioned, the ball slowly trickled past the goal line to make it a 1-0 match in favor of the visitors.

It didn't take long for Hartford to come back, however, as junior Anthony Santaga quickly tied the score at 1-1 out of the ensuing kick-off, just 10 seconds after Quinnipiac took the lead. After receiving a pass from defender Connor Yeaney, Santaga dribbled through the Bobcats' defenders, headed the ball over Quinnipiac keeper Borja Angoitia and again used his head to punch the ball into the back of the net on the counter attack.

All 10 of Santaga's points this year have come at Alumni Stadium, where the Hawks own a perfect 3-0 mark. The forward has scored four times and adds a pair of assists to his name.

In the final minutes of the first half, Simms, who came just a foot wide of netting the go-ahead goal in the 17th minute, put the Hawks ahead for good in the 38th minute using a series of passes from Damion Lowe and Santaga. Lowe initiated the offense by sending a long, booming pass down field into the 18-yard box, finding the head of Santaga. Simms corralled the redirected pass and unloaded a shot, beating the Bobcats' keeper to his right while making it a 2-1 contest with his team-best seventh goal of the year.

Quinnipiac, which held an 8-4 shot advantage in the second half, had some near misses down the stretch. In the 77th minute, Robbie McLarney sent a lateral pass to Simon Hinde who put a right foot on the ball and blasted it from 40-yards out. The rocket was slightly high of its mark as it hit the bottom of the crossbar and landed at the foot of a Hartford defender to be booted away.

A final chance for the Bobcats came inside of the two minute mark when William Daniels took a crack from the edge of the 18-yard box. His shot was sent just wide of the left post and trickled out of bounds for a goal kick, preserving the victory for the Hawks.

The Bobcats finished the match with an advantage in both shots (15-8) and corner kicks (3). In goal, Angoitia recorded one save while Tuumi was forced in to action on three occasions.
