WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior Chanel Johnson netted her first career hat trick lifting the University of Hartford women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory in the 99th minute against the Stony Brook Seawolves on Thursday at Al-Marzook field at Alumni Stadium. Hartford improves to 7-4-3 overall and 2-2-0 in America East action.
Johnson connected with Arielle Aikens for the golden goal in the first overtime period. Aikens provided a cross at the top of the box where Johnson blasted her attempt between a pair of Stony Brook defenders into the upper right corner. With her three goals against the Seawolves, Johnson is tied with Natasha Douglas with a team-best five goals.
Hawks keeper Jessica Jurg closed out her sixth victory of the season with four saves, three in the opening half and one in the second period. The Hawks and Seawolves finished tied in overall shots with 18 a piece, however Hartford outshot the Seawolves 17-10 in the second and overtime periods combined. The Hawks also collected six corner kicks with just two for the Seawlolves.
Jurg collected her first two saves within the opening four minutes, facing two Seawolves shots from well outside the 18-yard box. Johnson provided the Hawks scoring opportunity as she looked to angle a shot inside the opposite upright, but her attempt went wide of the goal. With just over 17 minutes left in the opening half, the Hawks threatened again as Elise Galipo sent a ball across the front of the goal looking for the head of Johnson but her cross was just out of Johnson's reach.
Stony Brook put the first score on the board with just under one minute remaining before the halftime break. Christina Casamassina scored her first goal of the season on a scrum in front of the net after the Seawolves restarted play on a free kick opportunity. Christina Fluman provided her first assist on the goal.
Hartford had a free kick opportunity of their own in the final seconds of the opening half with Kristen McAdams serving the ball into the box. After a few back and forth volleys, the Hawks best attempt came with one second on the clock as Sarah Velasquez fired a shot from just a few yards out that Stony Brook keeper Ashley Castanio kick saved to keep her team ahead 1-0 at the break.
Hartford evened the score just over three minutes into the second period as Johnson fired her first shot of the game from 40 yards out netting her third score of the season. The junior blasted her attempt from well outside of the box and the natural curve allowed for the ball to fall in just under the crossbar.
Johnson struck again in the 55th minute with a play that began well down field. Johnson accepted a long pass and after out wheeling her defensive threat took a couple dribbles and used a right foot to score in the lower left corner easily evading the Seawolves keeper.
Galipo looked as if she would provide the third Hartford goal with 28 minutes remaining when she attempted to angle her shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Castanio diving to her left just barely gloved the attempt outside of the far upright setting up the Hawks second corner kick of the evening. Hartford's next opportunity came on a free kick on the edge of the box with the service from Stephanie Santos sailing just over the crossbar.
Stony Brook tied the game for the second time when they scored with just over 19 minutes remaining knotting the game at two. Queli Ornelas was credited with her third goal of the season as she redirected a cross from Leah Yurko, sneaking the ball just inside of the right side upright.
Johnson narrowly missed scoring her third goal of the game as part of a two-shot volley. The first shot came from Sidney Spremullo and was blocked by the Seawolves defense. Johnson collected the rebound and blasted her sixth shot square off the crossbar with the deflection falling well outside the box. A few minutes later Galipo kept the pressure on when she fired her second shot of the night straight away at the goal where Castanio collapsed on the attempt.
Just 38 seconds into the first overtime period Hartford had a great look at ending the game when Johnson sent a pass deep into the Seawolves zone where Aikens out ran her defender. After tracking down Johnson's pass, Aikens blasted a shot from the edge of the six-yard box where. Castanio had to make a diving slap save to keep the score tied a two and extend the extra time.
Hartford will play its next two games on the road, the first of which is a trip to the newest member of the America East Conference, UMass Lowell. The Hawks and River Hawks are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Sunday, October 13.
