Box Score VESTAL, N.Y. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team ended a two-game stretch of road contests with its second-straight shutout, notching a 2-0 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats on Thursday night. Sophomore Elise Galipo scored her second goal of the season, her first game-winner, in the seventh minute, the only tally needed for the Hawks.
Hartford came out of the gates pressuring the Bearcats hard with five shots in the first 25 minutes, leading to a 2-0 lead in the opening half. Galipo tacked on her second goal of the season on a long shot to the opposite post from outside the 18-yard box.
The Hawks leading scorer, junior Chanel Johnson provided an insurance tally just over 12 minutes later using the turf to her advantage. Johnson's seventh goal of the year came from approximately 26 yards out as she bounced the attempt off the turf with the ricochet leading Binghamton's keeper, Carrie Martin, in the opposite direction of the ball. Johnson has now scored five goals in three straight games.
Hartford threatened again less than three minutes later when Galipo blasted her second shot of the game on goal with her attempt deflecting off the crossbar. Johnson and Kristen McAdams provided the Hawks other two shots in the opening 25 minutes with each of those attempts wide of the net.
Binghamton put the first shot of the game on goal with Jessica Jurg collecting her first of four saves in the opening half just 73 seconds into the contest. The Bearcats totaled seven shots in the first half, which also included the final scoring attempt of the first 45 minutes which resulted in Jurg's fourth save of the game. Hartford finished with five shots in the initial half, taking the 2-0 advantage into the locker room at the break.Â
The Hawks kept the pressure on in the second half with Johnson recording four shots in the first 20 minutes with Jurg also collecting a pair of saves in that same span, giving her six total for the game. Johnson's fifth shot of the half came in the 73rd minute, forcing the Bearcats second half keeper, Gaby Gold, to make the first save of the night for Binghamton.
Sidney Spremullo put one more shot on goal for Hartford in the second half which Gold collected her second and final save on. Hartford's Jurg finished the game with seven total saves, adding her final one with under eight minutes remaining to secure her conference leading seventh shutout of the season. Hartford finished the game with a 13-11 shot advantage, overall
Hartford returns home for its regular season home finale on Sunday, October 20 when they welcome the Vermont Catamounts to Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. The Hawks and Catamounts are scheduled for a 2 p.m. kick off with a pre-game ceremony scheduled to honor four players who will play their final regular season home contest as a Hawk.Â
