BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team's 2013 season came to a close on Sunday afternoon following a 2-0 loss to the top-seeded UMBC Retrievers in the semifinals of the America East Championship. The Hawks end 2013 with an 11-6-3 record.
The Hawks finished the semifinal match-up with 11 total shots, led by America East Striker-of-the-Year Chanel Johnson who took four total shots, with three of them forcing the Retrievers keeper to make a save. Hartford keeper, rookie Jessica Jurg, finished the game with four saves.
UMBC took its 2-0 lead in the opening half with goals from Alexa Quaranta and Morgan Taylor. Quaranta opened the scoring in the 13th minute when she scored off a restart. Nikki Boretti tapped the direct kick to her right where Quaranta worked her way around the wall and fired a shot from left to right finding the upper right corner of the goal.
The insurance goal from Taylor, her first goal of the season, came in the 38th minute as she blasted a long shot from well beyond 30 yards out that took a high bounce. Jurg knocked down the shot but the ball was completely over the end line for the score.
Hartford finished the opening half with six total shots, testing UMBC's Lauren Kadet twice. Co-Midfielder of the Year Stephanie Santos provided the first sot of the game eight minutes into the action with Kadet recording her first save on the attempt. Johnson then provided the next scoring opportunity for the Hawks, working off the first corner kick of the contest. Santos sent the restart deep into the six-yard box where Johnson managed to get her body on the ball deflecting it towards the goal line where Kadet secured the save.
The Hawks had a pair of opportunities come with approximately 16 minutes left before the break, the first from Amanda Hamilton and the second from Kristen McAdams. Hamilton provided a header attempt off another corner kick opportunity, with her shot going wide right. McAdam's attempt was a blast from the top of the 18-yard box off a deflected cross from Johnson. Her attempt sailed wide left.
Hartford looked to score right off the second UMBC goal when Sidney Spremullo took the restart down field, blasting a shot from 23 yards out that missed the mark to the left. Jurg finished the half without a save for the Hawks, while her counterpart, Kadet, finished with two saves.
Following a shot from Elise Galipo 75 seconds into the second half, the Retrievers put up a pair of shots. The first from Taylor resulted in Jurg's first save of the afternoon, while Quaranta tapped a shot from six-yards out off a cross from Stephanie Smith, with the shot attempt going wide right.
The Hawks two best opportunities in the second half came back-to-back with just under 27 minutes remaining. The first of those shots came from freshman defender Caitlin Smallfield whose header off a direct kick restart from Santos fell just over the top of the crossbar.
The second shot was arguably the best opportunity of the afternoon as Johnson collected a deflection off a corner kick. Her shot, through the middle of four defenders, came from the top of the six-yard box with UMBC's Kadet in perfect position to collect the save in her chest.Â
