WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—A pair of seniors in
Bogdan Nedelcu and
Edgardo Ureta earned singles victories in their final home matches as Hartford Hawks Wednesday afternoon. The senior duo posted both points for the Hawks as the men's tennis team fell, 5-2, to Fairfield.
Playing at the No. 5 singles position, Nedelcu jumped out to an early lead over Fairfield's BJ Merinder with a 6-4 win in the first set. Merinder took the second set, 6-3, to force a tiebreak. Nedelcu, a senior from Rocky Hill, Conn., took control in that third set, taking the frame with a 6-4 result to win the match.
Ureta, a Las Vegas, Nev., native, earned the second point for the Hawks with a victory at the No. 6 singles slot. The senior notched a 6-3, 6-4 win in his final home match in a Hartford uniform.
In doubles play, the top tandem of
Jordan Badenko and
Nicholas Sharwarko picked up an 8-3 win over their opponents from Fairfield, but the Stags picked up the doubles point with wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 matches.
The Hawks wrap up regular season play with a trip to America East Conference foe Boston University on Sunday before heading to Catonsville, Md., for the America East Championship April 26.
