Hawks Finish First Road Contest in 0-0 Stalemate at Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team completed its opening weekend with a 0-0 stalemate against Saint Joseph's University on Saturday at Sweeney Field. The Hawks remain undefeated in 2013 and have shutout both of its first two opponents.

Transfer goalkeeper Alison Koerkenmeier completed her second blank slate of the young season collecting six total saves against Saint Joseph's. The junior net minder was put to the test in the second half facing 11 shots overall with four of them forcing the Trenton, Ill. Native into action. She would also collect a pair of saves in the extra time, one in each of the overtime periods.

Overall, the Hawks were outshot by Saint Joseph's who finished with an 18-11 advantage. After a relatively quiet opening half both teams combined for 18 total shots in the second 45 minutes with the home team taking 11 of those shots compared to seven for the Hawks. In the first extra period Hartford outshot Saint Joseph's by a 2-1 margin while the home team added one shot in the second 15 minute extra period.

Saint Joseph's had its best chance at scoring come in the 84th minute when Koerkenmeier fell to the ground. SJU rookie Emily Gingrich drilled a shot to the right side of the goal where the Hawks defense was in perfect position to deny the opportunity.

The Hawks had a key opportunity in the final minute of regulation when Raelynn Mikell had a header opportunity off the boot of Kristen McAdams narrowly miss the net. McAdams also had a great scoring opportunity when she fired a shot from 25 yards out that just missed the upright. Saint Joseph's keeper Lauren Jancuska was forced to make three saves in the Hawks 11 total shots.

Hartford returns to the field on Thursday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. kick off against the Iona Gaels from the MAAC Conference. Last season, the Hawks posted a 2-0 shtuout of the Gaels, the third game in a four-game streak of blank slates.
