Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshman keeper Jessica Jurg completed her second straight shut out between the pipes as the Hartford women's soccer team finished 110 minutes against Holy Cross scoreless at the Fairfield Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday. Jurg completed her second blank slate with five saves, a career high for the rookie.
Overall, Hartford finished with a dominating 16-8 shot performance with nine of those shots coming in the first 45 minutes. The Hawks and Crusaders did need to wait out a weather delay that halted the action with 4:43 remaining in the opening half. Two of the Hawks nine first half shots forced the Holy Cross keeper, Carly McCabe, into action. McCabe finished the game with five total saves.
Hartford had its best opportunity come just 68 seconds into the action, all beginning with a corner kick served into the box by sophomore Sydney Aldrich. Her ball found the head of rookie Caitlin Smallfield whose header shot was blocked by the Crusaders defense. Senior Natasha Douglas collected the blocked shot ad fired her first attempt of the night, just missing from five yards out.
Thirty seconds after that barrage of attempts, junior Chanel Johnson had her first of a team-best four shots which forced McCabe to make her first save of the contest. The Hawks would then force McCabe to make a pair of saves seven minutes apart in the 22nd and 29th minutes on shots from defender Emma Donnelly and Johnson.
With 15 minutes remaining in the second half, Hartford had its best look of the period come from Johnson who fired a shot that looked like it would squeeze into the top corner of the goal but was tipped over the crossbar from McCabe. On the ensuing corner kick, McCabe was forced to make another stop when another header from Smallfield was on point.
In the first overtime period both keepers were put to the test in the first five minutes as Jurg collected her final save on a shot in the 94rd minute off the boot of Annie Galvin. Senior Arielle Aikens provided the Hawks only shot on goal in the first 10 minute extra period with her attempt forcing McCabe to collect her fourth save in the 95th minute.
Hartford will continue play at the Fairfield Women's Soccer Tournament on Sunday when they take on the American Eagles at 11 a.m. at Lessing Field.Â
