Jurg Collects Third Straight Shutout, Hawks Top American 1-0

Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Jurg completed her third straight shutout leading the University of Hartford women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the American Eagles in the second game of the Fairfield Women's Soccer Invitational on Sunday. For her work over the two-game tournament, Jurg was one of three Hawks named to the All-Tournament team joining Amanda Hamilton and Chanel Johnson.

Jurg collected four saves in the 90 minute contest with sophomore Elise Galipo collecting the lone goal in the game in the seventh minute of the game. Galipo connected with Johnson who fed her inside the top corner of the box. Galipo's shot beat the American keeper Charlene Belanger to the far post.

Belanger was forced to make six total saves, while she faced a total of 16 shots from the Hartford offense, eight in each of the two periods. Johnson would finish the game with a career-high 11 shots for Hartford. Defensively, the Hawks allowed nine shots from American, with just the four forcing Jurg into action.

The Eagles challenged Hartford right out of the gates with a pair of shots in the first 34 seconds, the first blocked by the Hawks defense while Jurg collected her first save on the second shot.

The Hawks would then put up back-to-back shots 59 seconds apart, the first from Johnson which forced Belanger to make her first save of the contest. The second shot would prove to be the only one that mattered as it resulted in the lone score 6:33 into the game. It was also the first goal of the season for Galipo, who is the Hawks leading returning scorer from 2012.

Just three minutes after the Hartford goal, the Hawks challenged American again as Johnson fired back-to-back shots 11 second apart, the first blocked by an American defender with the third going wide of the goal.

Hartford would fire four more shots in the first half, including the last three of the period. The first of those attempts came in the 37th minute from Johnson, forcing Belanger to make a save. The second came 43 seconds after that from Natasha Douglas and sailed high over the goal. The last scoring opportunity in the first 45 minutes came from sophomore Erica Primovic as she forced Belanger into action for her fourth save of the half.

The Hawks began the second half the same way American began the game, testing the Eagles 28 seconds into the action as Johnson propelled her next attempt on goal forcing Belanger into action.

Johnson kept the pressure on over a five minute span in the middle of the second half as she had three scoring opportunities between the 57th and 62nd minutes. The final of those shots would force Belanger to make her sixth and final save of the game.

The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 18 when they close out a four-game road trek with a visit to another Nutmeg State foe, Yale University. The Hawks and Bulldogs are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick off at Reese Stadium.
