Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team dropped just its second game in 2013, falling 2-0 against the Yale University Bulldogs on Wednesday night. The Hawks fall to 3-2-3 overall and will next host CCSU on Sunday, September 22.
The Hawks keeper, rookie Jessica Jurg, faced a total of 14 shots from the Bulldogs, collecting a season-high six saves. Hartford finished the night with eight shots, forcing Elise Wilcox to make two saves. Wilcox split time with Rachel Ames in goal, each playing a single half for Yale.
Hartford had its best scoring opportunity come in the opening half when sophomore Sidney Spremullo raised a shot off a cross from Arielle Aikens that hit the target but Wilcox handled for her first save of the night. Aikens then forced the first half keeper back into action 58 seconds later when she fired a shot that the Bulldog net minder saved.
Yale broke the scoreless tie late in the 58th minute when the Bulldogs Shannon McSweeney scored her first goal of the season on a header. The goal was the first allowed by rookie keeper Jessica Jurg who had not allowed a score through 347-plus minutes. McSweeney's goal began as a corner kick served into the box by Frannie Coxe who recorded her fourth assist of the year.
The Bulldogs added an insurance goal in the 75th minute, again striking on a play that began as a corner kick from Coxe. This time, Coxe's service found the head of Muriel Battaglia who connected for her first goal of the season.
Hartford had a pair of opportunities come late in the second half when Chanel Johnson fired back-to-back shots 20 seconds apart in the 80th minute. Both shots were both blocked by the Bulldogs defense before they were able to challenge Yale's second half keeper, Ames.
The Hartford women's soccer team returns to Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium for the first time since September 5 when they welcome Central Connecticut State University to West Hartford. The Hawks and Blue Devils are scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m.Â
