WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team collected their fourth victory in 2012 on Sunday defeating the CCSU Blue Devils 2-0 at Alumni Stadium. Junior Chanel Johnson scored the Hawks game-winning goal just 18 minutes into the action while defender Morgan Berry scored her first collegiate goal in the second half.

Hartford struck first in the initial seconds of the 18th minute when Johnson connected with Stephanie Santos for the opening score. The play began with the Hawks second corner kick of the contest served in by Santos. CCSU keeper Nikola Dieter punched out the ball where Santos, who had rushed back into the play, collected and crossed a line drive through the box. Johnson was in perfect position to head in her second goal of the season across the front of the goal to the opposite corner.

About 10 minutes later, Natasha Douglas streaked ahead on a cross pass looking for the Hawks second goal of the game but was unsuccessful as the ball rolled over the end line. Johnson had two additional attempts in the 33rd and 35th minute but was unable to put either shot on goal. Both teams finished the opening half with five shots apiece, while Hartford keeper Jessica Jurg wasn't put to the test.

The Hawks had their first attempt in the second half come courtesy of a miscue by the CCSU keeper, whose service out of the box was broken up by Johnson. The junior midfielder turned with the ball and quickly fired a shot on goal that was tracked down by Dieter.

CCSU looked to have its first scoring attempt three minutes later off a free kick just inside the midfield line. The long pass into the box bounced once inside the six yard box and easily controlled by the Hawks keeper.

The Blue Devils had their first official shot on goal come in the 60th minute as rookie midfielder Morgan Santoro had a bicycle kick attempt inside the 18-yard box. Hartford's rookie keeper, Jurg registered her first save of the game easily gathering the attempt a few yards off the end line.

Hartford added an insurance goal with 27:06 remaining in regulation, again working off a corner kick opportunity. Santos served the ball deep into the box where Berry, an All-Rookie selection in 2012, headed in her first career goal. The assist for Santos was her second of the game and her third since transferring to Hartford. The Hawks looked to score again less than a minute later as Johnson provided her sixth shot of the game straight away at Deiter who collected the attempt for her first save.

Santos nearly collected her third assist of the game when she served the Hawks fifth corner kick into the box with seven minutes remaining. Johnson tracked down the ball and had her header attempt ricochet off the top corner of the left side post. She would collect the rebound and fire a second shot that went wide of the net.

Hartford continues a series of three-straight games against Connecticut opponents when it welcomes the Sacred Heart Pioneers to Alumni Stadium on Thursday, September 26 at 7 p.m. The match-up between the Hawks and Pioneers will be Hartford's final test before opening up America East Conference action as the pre-season favorite to win the league title.
