Softball Drops Final Two Games of Hornets Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DOVER, Del. – The University of Hartford closed out the Hornets Invitational with a pair of losses on Sunday. The Hawks fell in five innings to Lehigh by a 9-0 final before dropping a 1-0 battle with host team Delaware State in the tournament's finale. Dipping to 2-11, the Hawks will open their 2014 home schedule on Wednesday when they host URI in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.

The final contest of the tournament, which was the third time Hartford faced Delaware State on the weekend, was a pitcher's duel as the score remained deadlock at zero until the bottom of the fifth inning. In the first three frames, the Hawks held the Hornets to just four base runners, but had difficulty producing offense of their own.

Hartford posted its first real threat in the top of the fourth inning, as junior Jenice Aloyo reached first after an infield error in the first at-bat of the frame. After stealing second, the Hartford outfielder took third on a ground out by Sawyer Fried. With first baseman Chelsey Mooney at the plate, Delaware State would silence Hartford's scoring attempt as Aloyo was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Jackie Kelly notched a single down the middle of the infield, but the final out of the inning would be recorded on a pop-up to centerfield.

Another scoring chance was seen by the home team in the top of the fifth as the Hawks got another runner into scoring position. Earning a walk with one out, Erin Okoniewski was pushed to second base on a sacrifice fly off the barrel of freshman Meghan Wynn. In the next play, an Amber Andrews single, Okoniewski moved to third base. However, the sophomore was tagged out in a play at the plate after trying to grab one more base out of the hit.

The lone run of the game was produced in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The tally spoiled a strong outing for Hartford starter Zuzana Kudernatschova, who struck out four batters and scattered just four hits six innings, as the go-ahead run was plated as a result of a fielding error by the Hawks. Reaching on a miscue by the infield with one out, Kaitlyn Slater scored the only run three batters later, crossing home on an infield single from Rochelle Sablay.

Hartford made a late rally in the seventh inning, as Okoniewski and Wynn went back-to-back for singles with two outs. Following a pitching change that saw Vanessa Ciocatto replace Tara Tursellino, the Hornets got out of the jam, inducing Andrews into an infield pop-up to score the win.

In the opening game against Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and expanded that advantage to 7-0 before the end of the second. Plating single runs in the top of the fourth and the top of the fifth, Lehigh ended the game in five innings as a result of the mercy rule.

Starting pitcher Quigley conceded just three hits to the Hawks as Fried collected a pair in as many at-bats and Kelly finished 1-of-2 from the plate. The Mountain Lions' hurler struck out four batters to earn the win. Kaitlyn Meade took the loss for Hartford, allowing eight runs – six earned – in 3.1 innings.
