Box Score 2 WEST HARTFORD, Conn.— The University of Hartford softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against the visiting Siena Saints. Hartford dropped the first game, 8-0, but pulled out a shutout victory in the second, defeating Siena, 1-0. The Hawks' record stands at 6-14 on the season, while the Saints shift to 10-11 overall.
The second game of the day was a back-and-forth battle to see who would reach the scoreboard first. It was the Hawks who prevailed, scoring with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Melanie Kalesse, the Saints' shortstop, bobbled a grounder off the bat of junior
Margaret Betz, allowing freshman
Dani Regina to score the eventual game-winning run from third base.
Freshman
Lexi Wilkerson (3-4) had a solid outing inside the circle giving up no runs on eight hits. She added four strikeouts to her first career shutout performance. The Hartford bats saw a lot more action than they did in Saturday's first outing as it picked up five total hits from five different Hawks:
Amber Andrews, Mackenzie,Obert,
Meghan Wynn, Betz and
Marisa Ferguson.
In the morning game, the Saints managed to put up three runs early on the Hawks in their first at-bats. Alyssa Lancaster started the scoring as she doubled to deep left center to drive in Melanie Kalesse, who reached on a fielder's choice, from first. Right after, Jordan Sandrini singled to center, which brought in Lancaster for the second run of the frame, while Chelsey Drew doubled to left with two outs to bring in Sandrini and give the Saints the early 3-0 cushion.
Siena would add another three runs to their lead in the top of the third before increasing its lead to 8-0 in the visitor's half of the fifth inning. Hartford was unable to pick up any runs in its final at bats in the bottom of the inning as it went down one, two, three to end the first game ended in Siena's favor.
Jessika-Jo Sandrini (9-4) recorded 10 strikeouts for the Saints, holding the Hawks to three total hits by
Amber Andrews,
Sawyer Fried and Ferguson.
Ana Alberti (1-3), suffered the loss for the Hawks, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits.
The Hawks conclude their nine-game homestand this Tuesday against Dartmouth for an out-of-conference doubleheader. The first game will begin at 2:30 p.m.
