Ferguson Slams First Career Triple in Hawks' Loss to UAlbany

Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The visiting UAlbany Great Danes defeated the University of Hartford softball team, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon, completing the series sweep with the win. Hartford, which returns to action with a single game at home against Dartmouth on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., falls to 7-21 overall and 1-8 in the America East while UAlbany improves to 19-9 on the season and 8-3 in conference action.

Taking a 1-0 lead to open the game, the Great Danes extended their advantage to 3-0 in the following frame. Back-to-back singles by Elizabeth Snow and Lauren Alcorn to start the top of the second capped by a one-out walk drawn by Alexa Toole loaded up the bases for the Great Danes, allowing consecutive base hits from Vicky McFarland and Kelly Costello to manufacture a pair of runs.

In the top of the fifth, UAlbany added another run to its count and took a 4-0 lead on a Hawks' miscue in the infield. Leading off the inning was McFarland, who recorded her third hit of the game on a double to left center. After taking third on a wild pitch, the left fielder came across home on a Costello steal, adding her team's fourth run to the board on a throwing error on the play.

Hartford managed to grab one run back in the bottom of the fifth, with the bottom of the lineup producing the tally. With two outs, freshman Meghan Wynn sparked the rally by slamming a single into left field. That set the scene for classmate Marisa Ferguson, who blasted her first career triple into centerfield to bring in the Hawks' lone score of the contest.

Junior Jackie Kelly finished 2-for-3 at the plate, doubling in the sixth inning. Recording four strikeouts, Zuzana Kudernatschova dropped to 2-9 on the season with the loss after conceding four runs, three of which were earned. For the Great Danes, Brittany MacFawn, who earned the win in the opening game, fanned 11 batters to push her record to 10-5.
