Box Score STORRS, Conn. – In mid-week action, freshman
Marisa Ferguson hit her first career home run as the University of Hartford softball team dropped a 12-1 decision at UConn on Wednesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The Hawks (7-22) return to action this weekend at Binghamton, kicking off the three-game America East Conference series with a doubleheader at noon Saturday.
An impressive performance by Kayla Doty in the circle coupled with a five-RBI afternoon by leftfielder Heather Fyfe propelled UConn (10-29) to the single game victory. Fyfe finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Huskies, who also received three RBI apiece from Dominique Pinto and Emily O'Donnell.
Each team used a long ball to score its first runs of the afternoon as O'Donnell slammed a three-run homer for UConn in the bottom of the second before Ferguson followed suit with her first career bomb, a solo shot, in the top half of the third to make it a 3-1 contest.
One big hit in each of the next two innings allowed UConn to expand its advantage to 12-1 by the end of the fourth inning. After Alyssa Gardea earned a free RBI on a bases loaded, one-out walk in the third, Fyfe quickly put the Huskies ahead by seven runs at 8-1 with a grand slam in the next at-bat. UConn again cleared loaded bases in the following inning with a Pinto triple plating three more runs. Fyfe closed out the scoring two batters later, bringing in Pinto on a single to right field.
In five innings, Doty allowed one earned run on a pair of hits while recording six strikeouts. Freshman
Lexi Wilkerson suffered the loss for Hartford, conceding eight runs – four earned – on four hits through 2.1 innings. Senior
Kaitlyn Meade struck out four in the final 1.2 innings, giving up four earned runs on three hits.
