Box Score VESTAL, N.Y. – Six Hawks collected hits on Sunday afternoon as the University of Hartford softball team fell, 10-3, at Binghamton in the final outing of a three-game series. Hartford falls to 1-11 in the conference (7-25 overall) while the Bearcats improve to 8-3 in America East games (18-18 overall).
Going perfect in all three of her at-bats, senior
Chelsey Mooney paced the Hartford hitters. Classmate
Amber Andrews went 2-for-4, adding an RBI. For the Bearcats, Taylor Chaffee collected four RBI, homering twice in the game.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Binghamton rallied for four more in the following frame to take a 7-0 advantage. Leading off the second inning with back-to-back singles, Sydney Harbaugh cleared the base paths with a triple, making it a five-run contest. Two batters later, Chaffee provided her squad with the seven-run cushion using one swing of the bat to bring in two runners on her first homer of the contest.
Hartford grabbed one run back in the visiting half of the third as Andrews touched home with two outs after reaching base on a fielder's choice. Junior
Jackie Kelly smacked the single that brought in Andrews to put her team up on the scoreboard.
The Hawks continued to claw away at their deficit and pulled within four in the top half of the fourth. Back-to-back singles by
Mackenzie Obert and Mooney started off the frame. After the duo advanced 60 feet each down the base paths on a wild pitch,
Meghan Wynn brought in Obert on an infield ground out and Andrews kept the rally going, singling in Mooney.
The game wouldn't get any closer, though, as Binghamton launched back-to-back long balls to extend its lead to seven runs. With a runner on the paths, Chaffee brought her teammate in on her second home run of the contest before Lisa Cadogan's solo shot made it a 10-3 game.
Ana Alberti took the loss for the Hawks, conceded seven runs to the Bearcats. Annika Wiesinger came away with the win for Binghamton, improving to 6-9 after allowing three runs – two earned – and striking out one.
The Hawks return home to host Fairfield in mid-week action. The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Wednesday with first pitch slated to be thrown at 2:30 p.m.
