Softball Ends 2014 Home Slate with Loss to UMBC

Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Playing at home for the final time this season, the University of Hartford softball dropped a 10-0 decision to the UMBC Retrievers in the last contest of a three-game set on Monday morning. The Hawks drop to 7-28 overall with a 1-14 mark in conference play while the Retrievers improve to 31-17 and 8-6 in the America East.

Striking out four batters, Jessica Holte tossed a five-inning, no-hitter to help pace UMBC to the series sweep. Only two Hawks (Sawyer Fried and Marisa Ferguson) reached base, earning one walk apiece in the first and fourth innings, respectively.

UMBC jumped out to take a 6-0 advantage in the top half of the second, using five hits and an error to do the early damage to the scoreboard. Two innings later, Taylor Hall blasted a grand slam over the right center wall to put the contest out of reach. In the circle, rookie Lexi Wilkerson suffered the loss, conceding six runs – two earned – in 1.2 innings. Junior Ana Alberti threw the final two frames, scattering just one hit.

The Hawks return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon when they head down to instate rival Quinnipiac for a pair of games. The two teams are scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
