Box Score 2 STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Returning to America East action for the first time in two weeks, the University of Hartford softball team fell to the reigning league champion Stony Brook in a pair of games on Saturday. The Hawks came up one-run short in game one, falling by a 2-1 final, before suffering a 9-0 loss in the nightcap. The two teams will wrap-up the regular season series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon.
In the opening game, the Hawks (6-17) combatted a second-inning, RBI double by Stony Brook's (14-13) Caruso by scoring a single run in the fifth frame. Junior
Margaret Betz produced the game-tying run on an infield groundout that brought in sophomore
Erin Okoniewski. After leading off the frame by ripping a base hit down the left field line, Okoniewski took third on a fielding error and awarded Betz the RBI with her team's first run of the game.
The tie didn't last long, though, as Stony Brook got the run back in the home half of the inning despite a strong outing for Hawks' pitcher Zuzana Kudernatschovato. Producing the Seawolves' go-ahead run was Giosia, who singled to left field to plate Schieferstei after she started off the inning with an infield base hit.
Kudernatschova struck out four in the loss, allowing the two earned runs on nine hits. For the Seawolves, Allison Cukrov scattered three hits and struck out seven to improve to 9-7 overall.
In the afternoon's second game, Stony Brook plated three runs in the first and second innings to jump out to the early 6-0 advantage. The Seawolves then added a single run in the bottom of the third before ballooning their lead to 9-0 in the bottom half to the fourth with a pair of tallies. Sophomore
Sawyer Fried went 2-for-2 to lead the Hawks who managed just three hits off Seawolves starting hurler Jane Sallen. Sallen went the distance, recording one strikeout to earn the win. For Hartford, Kudernatschova took the loss after 1.2 innings.
