Senior
Chelsey Mooney got her Sunday going with a bang, launching a two-run shot over the right center field fence to put her team in front by a 2-0 count in the top of the first. The first baseman's second long ball of the year also scored classmate
Amber Andrews, who led off the contest by getting hit by a stray pitch. The Seawolves had answers, though, as two home runs in the home half of the frame gave Stony Brook a lead it would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
Jessica Combs got the bats going for the Seawolves, taking the second pitch she faced and sending it over the left center wall. After Olivia Mintun was struck by a pitch, Shayla Giosia delivered the game-tying and go-ahead run with a home run of her own. Before the end of the frame, the Seawolves added one more run as Melissa Phalen, who reached on a single, crossed home on a fielding miscue by the Hawks.
Stony Brook extended its lead to 5-2 in the third with an RBI single from Jessica Zeilman before adding four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. A two-out, two-run home run off the barrel of Bria Green's bat in the sixth pushed the Seawolves' advantage to nine runs at 11-2, and ended the contest as a result of the mercy rule.
After conceding the home run to Mooney, Stony Brook starter Allison Cukrov clamped down and did not allow another Hartford for the remainder of the game. She improves to 10-7 on the season while
Zuzana Kudernatschova, the Hawks' starting hurler, dips to 2-7 overall.
