Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Chelsey Mooney and sophomore
Sawyer Fried collected four RBIs apiece on Wednesday, helping the University of Hartford softball team to a split afternoon at Yale. The Hawks came up one run short in the opening game, falling 6-5, before bouncing back to take a 6-3 win in the nightcap. Hartford improves to 7-18 overall while Yale shifts to 5-23.
Also scoring four times on the afternoon, Fried's two-bagger in the second game proved to be the difference maker in the win. The Hawks never trailed in the contest, despite seeing a three-run advantage in the opening inning get cut down to one by the Bulldogs at the end of the frame. With freshman
Dani Regina and senior
Amber Andrews on the corners thanks to a fielder's choice and a double, respectively, Fried cleared the bases with her double to provide a 5-2 cushion for the visiting squad.
Mooney kept the rally going, extending Hartford's lead to 6-3 on a single to centerfield. Her base hit, the third of the afternoon for the first baseman, brought in Fried from second.
Yale managed to grab one more run off Hawks' starter
Ana Alberti, who scattered just five hits, in her final inning of action. Onorato drove-in that run with two outs on a double, plating Souza who reached base on a fielder's choice in the previous at-bat. Alberti improves to 2-3 on the year while
Kaitlyn Meade grabs her first save after keeping the Bulldogs scoreless and striking out one in the final three innings.
In the opening game, Hartford never trailed through the first five and a half frames, but saw a 5-3 advantage disappear thanks to three-run, sixth inning for the home team. After starting that decisive frame by inducing an Onorato fly-out, Yale rallied for four hits in the next five at-bats. Do started the comeback with a single, and Balta followed suit with a double to put runners on second and third.
A throwing miscue on a steal allowed Do to cross home for the first run of the frame before McGuire's two-out double played Balta for the game-tying run. The Bulldogs would scratch the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run across home in the next play as a Brennan single brought in McGuire to end the scoring.
Hartford was hot to start the game, as three runs came across home plate in the top of the first thanks to back-to-back hits by Mooney and Kelly. Setting the scene for the key hitting was
Mackenzie Obert and
Sawyer Fried, who earned walks in consecutive at-bats with one out recorded in the frame. A Mooney outfield single brought in Obert from second for the first run before Kelly cleared the bases with a double to right center to make it a 3-0 advantage for Hartford.
In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs struck the scoreboard with a pair of runs before tying up the game at three-all in the following stanza on a Balta RBI single. The Hawks picked up the offense, though, and regained the advantage in the top of the fifth on a two-out, single to left field. Despite a Fried sacrifice fly pushing Hartford's edge to two-runs in the following inning, Yale came back in the bottom of the sixth, rallying for three runs to take its first lead, one it would not relinquish.
Freshman
Lexi Wilkerson (3-5) suffered the loss for Hartford while Leung improved to 2-3 for Yale after working the final three innings.
Marisa Ferguson and
Jackie Kelly each combined for two doubles on the afternoon while Andrews also got in on the extra base hits with a two-bagger.
The Hawks return to America East action at home, opening up a three-game set with UAlbany with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
