Hawks Split, as Women Soar Past Fairfield

The University of Hartford tennis teams split a pair of matches with Fairfield on Tuesday at the Hartford Tennis Courts, with the women winning 6-1 over the Stags, but the men falling by a 6-1 score. It marked the third-straight win for the women's team, the first time the squad has won three straight matches over Division I foes in the last 10 years.

"I am incredibly proud to be a part of this team today," head coach Torr Terranova said. "It just shows what dedication by all parties over time can do. This is the closest the scores have been when playing Fairfield on the men's side in the five years I have been here, and this is the first win by the women over Fairfield in five years."

The women earned a strong 6-1 win over the Stags, the lone blemish a fierce battle by freshman Ariel Haber. The squad started strong by earning the doubles point, with Skyler Schaar/Haber earning a 6-4 win over Sarah Stuhlmann/Nicole Aragones at No. 1 and Hannah Goldman/Katherine Long adding a 6-4 win of their own over Courtney Connors/Cecilia Parla at No. 3. The Stags got a win from the duo of Karen McKeough/Meghan Zimmer, who edged Meredith Heitland/Emily Sneddon 6-3 at No. 2.

Sneddon came roaring back in the singles, as she rolled past Zimmer 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 to push the Hawks lead to 2-0. Haber, meanwhile was locked in a tremendous matchup against Aragones, taking the first 6-3, but falling 6-2 and 6-4 in the second and third, respectively. Heitland then rocketed past McKeough by a 6-1, 6-0 score, and it all came down to Schaar, the sophomore captain.

After taking the first set 6-4, Stuhlman bounced back with a 6-4 win of her own to tie the score at No. 1. Schaar then battled her way to a 6-3 win in the third to clinch the match for the Hawks. With the match decided, the teams decided to play a single set to eight, and Goldman and Long posted matching 8-4 wins to make it a 6-1 final score.

"It was an outstanding performance for our young Hawks on the women's side," Terranova said. "Skyler, Meredith and Katie all played great, Emily is finding her stride after a rough start to her junior year, and Hannah Goldman is building some confidence.

"Skyler has become our No. 1 singles player, and there is no doubting that anymore, especially after her win today," he added. "She beat an incredibly good player who pushed her as far as she could – Skyler was just too tough in the end. It was a true team effort on all fronts for the women."

On the men's side, the Hawks put up a strong fight across the board, but the Stags were able to take a 6-1 win. Fairfield garnered the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. But the Hawks got a strong win at No. 1 by the duo of Will Drumwright and Bryan Einstoss, 6-4.

The Stags started things in singles with straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2, then clinched the match with a three-set win at No. 3. Nicholas Sharwarko took the first set 7-5, but Anthony Caputo rallied back with a 6-3 win in the second and a 6-2 victory in the third to make it 4-0. The Stags added hard-fought straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5, but Morgan White delivered a whitewashing of Luke Lemieux at No. 6 to give the Hawks the point.

"Congrats to our top doubles team on the men's side," Terranova said. "Bryan and Will have strung together some great wins together this year and are firing on all cylinders. Morgan White played the way Morgan can – it was great to see."

The fall season is nearing its close for both programs, with the two squads taking on Quinnipiac on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Hartford Tennis Courts, then facing Bentley on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. The Bentley match will be the final outing for the squads until the spring campaign.
