Tennis Closes Fall Season with Split

The University of Hartford men's and women's tennis teams split a pair of dual matches with Bentley, as the Hawks women won their fourth match of the spring with a 6-1 victory over the Falcons. The Hawks men were edged in a heartbreaker, 4-3.

"The women finished the fall season on an all-time high," head coach Torr Terranova said. "We played six quality matches this fall against six high-quality opponents. To go 4-2 is one of the best fall showings in recent history when considering our strength of schedule. We are very young and have a lot of experience still to gain, though. There are only positives that can come from this fall season."

The women dominated the doubles, taking a 6-2 win at No. 1 from the duo of Skyler Schaar/Ariel Haber, a 6-0 win at No. 2 from Emily Sneddon/Meredith Heitland and a 6-3 win by Hannah Goldman/Katherine Long. Those results gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish.

In the singles, Haber made quick work of Brittani Hetyai, dispatching her opponent 6-2, 6-1. Sneddon followed in quick succession, delivering the same scores against Hanna Fabianski at No. 3. Schaar then clinched the match for her team with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ludmila Yamus for her fourth straight win in dual-match action at the No. 1 spot.

Heitland made it a 5-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexia Petruzziello at No. 4, and Long delivered a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6 to push the lead to 6-0. The Hawks came up short of the sweep, though, as Goldman was edged by Susan Stowe in the final match of the day, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.

On the men's side, the Hawks were edged by the Falcons thanks to four Bentley wins in singles play. The Hawks took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, but the Falcons overcame that with straight-set wins at Nos. 1, 2, and 4. The Hawks earned straight-set wins of their own from Will Drumwright at No. 3 and Morgan White at No. 6. It all came down to Juan Molina at No. 5, and the junior battled with Chase Rosa all the way to the final point, but wound up on the wrong end of a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 decision to give the match to the Falcons.

"The men played another tough team today, but came up short," Terranova said. "The fall has been filled with bright spots during tough times. Our doubles have improved substantially and we learned to play more compatible tennis. Some of the changes in schedule due to weather and the injuries we faced played a role in us being in the position we are. But we have the opportunity to learn to grow, which is invaluable. I'm looking forward to a great spring with our squad, especially our senior co-captains, Nick Sharwarko and Luis Montes."

The matches closed out the fall campaign for the Hawks, who will return to the court during the spring season. The women close the season with a 4-2 record, while the men wrap up the campaign at 1-4.
