CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The University of Hartford men's tennis team opened its spring schedule Saturday with a 7-0 road loss to Boston College.
Freshmen Ryan Lugtu and William Drumwright led the Hawks in the first two single match spots. Lugtu, playing in the number one spot, fell short to Boston College sophomore Hank Workman by a 6-2, 6-0 margin. Drumwright followed Lugtu in the number two spot dropping his match to junior Kyle Childree by the same 6-2, 6-0 score.
Junior Nicholas Sharwarko allowed Will Turner of Boston College to win the first set of the match 6-1, before taking a commanding lead in the second set with a 4-2 start. Turner then turned it around for the second half of the set coming back to defeat Sharwarko by a 6-4 margin.
Scoring the most single match points against Boston College on the afternoon, freshman Alexander Romaine battled Alexandre Thirouin in the fifth singles match. Romaine challenged Thirouin throughout the first set before falling 6-4 but was unable to keep up with the Boston College junior in the second set as he was defeated by an overall match score of 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomores Juan Molina- Naranjo and Morgan White were defeated by the Boston College Eagles in the fourth and sixth single spots, respectively. Molina fell to the veteran, Matt Wagner, by a score of 6-1, 6-1 before White came up short by a score of 6-2, 6-1 to freshman Jeffrey Melvin.
Boston College took advantage of doubles play receiving the lone doubles point, defeating the Hawks in all three matches. Romaine and Drumwright led the Hawks in doubles play as they teamed up in the number one spot for the third time this season. The freshman pair fell short to Childree and Workman by a score of 6-2. Falling by the same score in the number two doubles spot, Sharwarko and Lugtu picked up their third loss of the season against Nelson and Melvin of Boston College.
Molina- Naranjo and freshman Daniel Rombola gave the Hawks their best chance for a doubles win in the number three spot as they faced Boston College freshman Conor Mullins and senior Spencer Canny. The Hawk duo forced the Boston College pair to a 10 point set but fell short by a score of 6-4.
The Hawks fall to a 4-3 record on the season as Boston College improves to 5-3.
The University of Hartford men's tennis team will return to spring play as they compete against in-state rival Sacred Heart on Saturday February 21.
