Softball Comes Up Short in Second Day of Adidas Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The University of Hartford softball team competed in two games on the second day of the Adidas Tournament falling to Wagner 9-7 before being shutout in five innings by host Winthrop on Saturday afternoon. Senior center fielder Jenice Aloyo led the Hawks finishing the day with three hits on six attempts and one RBI.

The Hawks saw their best offensive play in the top of the second inning against Wagner, rallying three runs to put them ahead of the Seahawks 3-2. Senior Jackie Kelly put the Hawks on the board with a single to center bringing home freshman Danielle DeMarco, who led the inning with a double to right center field. Betz followed with a double to right center field advancing Kelly to third who eventaully scored later in the inning on a wild pitch by Wagner sophomore McKaleigh Goodale. Freshman Elizabeth Newkirk recorded the final RBI of the inning reaching base on a fielder's choice allowing Betz to score from third to put the Hawks up 3-2.

The Seahawks tied the score in the bottom of the second with a homerun by sophomore Aerika High over the right center field fence.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Hawks rallied two runs in the fifth starting with Aloyo's single to left field. Soles followed Aloyo with a double to center for her first RBI of the game later scoring on a passed ball to make the score 6-3.

The Hawks allowed the Seahawks to score six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning scattering five hits to take the lead, 9-6.

In their last attempt to even up the score, the Hawks rallied in the sixth inning scoring the last run of the game with a double by senior Peyton Fisher scoring freshman Christine Gonzalez who walked earlier in the inning to limit Wagner's lead to 2.

In the second game of the day, Hartford was held scoreless in an 8-0 five inning shutout to host Winthrop University.

Hartford's best inning came in the top of the fourth as Aloyo led off the inning with a double down the left field line followed by a single down the right field line by DeMarco to advance Aloyo. Betz flied out to left field to end the inning, leaving Aloyo and DeMarco stranded on base.

The Hawks started the fifth inning off with a single to left field by freshman Alex Saharek followed by a single down the right field line by freshman Brittany Wallace. Despite the back-to-back hits, Hartfordwas unable to bring the duo across the plate resulting in a five inning mercy rule.

Hartford relied on two freshman pitchers throughout the day starting with Kelsey Bird taking the 9-7 loss to Wagner facing 40 batters over six innings allowing just six walks as Bianca Ross took over the pitching duties in the loss against Winthrop allowing eight earned runs off of 10 hits.

The Hawks will return to the diamond in the Delaware Tournament on Saturday March 7 to face Delaware at 11:15 a.m. and Coppin State at 3:45 p.m.
