HAMILTON, N.Y.— After dropping the doubles point to Colgate, the University of Hartford women's tennis team rallied four straight singles points to defeat the Raiders, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon. The Hawk men also battled Colgate on Saturday afternoon but fell 7-0 through seven sets.
Three Hawks came back from first set losses to win over their Colgate opponents. Sophomore Emily Sneddon started the rally for the Hawks in the first singles match of the game after losing the first set to sophomore Kaelin Brittin in the number two spot, 1-6. Sneddon defeated Brittin in the remaining two sets to win the match, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Following Sneddon's comeback singles win, freshmen Katherine Long, Meredith Heitland and Skyler Schaar recorded consecutive wins for the Hawks. Long battled Colgate junior Jennifer Ho in the first singles position, coming back after a first set loss to record a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Heitland continued the Hawks comeback streak defeating sophomore Hannah Fleckerstein in the number four singles position 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Solidifying the Hawks win, Schaar defeated her opponent junior Katie Grant in the number three singles spot. Schaar dominated in all three sets, getting the Hawks fourth point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win.
On the men's side, the Hawks were unable to score a point throughout their seven set match. Junior Nicholas Sharwarko gave the Hawks their best chance at a singles point in the number four spot. Battling sophomore Win Reynolds through two sets, Sharwarko was unable to come up with the win being defeated, 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Ryan Lugtu played in the first singles spot for the fourth consecutive match of the spring season challenging Colgate freshman Jacob Daugherty through two sets before falling 6-1, 6-1.
The Hawk women improve to 4-7 on the season with their next match on Wednesday March 11 as they travel to New Haven to take on Yale at 10 a.m. The men will continue play on Friday March 13 as they host Northern Kentucky at 1:30 p.m.
