WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman Katherine Long earned a pair of singles victories over a four-match weekend for the University of Hartford women's tennis team. Long picked up wins at first singles against league rival Binghamton and against RPI in a match that was halted due to rain. Overall for the weekend, the Hawks dropped three matches against Rhode Island (5-2), Binghamton (5-1) and Chestnut Hill (7-0).
Long's first win of the weekend came against league for Binghamton as she scored the Hawks lone point of the match defeating the Bearcats Katherine Medianik in a tiebreaker. After winning shutting out her opponent in the opening set, the Bearcats top singles player tied the match at one set a piece with Long scoring a 7-6 (10-8) win in the third set tie breaker. In the halted match on Sunday, Long cruised to a straight set win over Casey Olsen 6-1, 6-0, while also partnering with classmate Skyler Schaar to score one of two doubles victories with a 6-0 win over Melanie Frank and Emily Laurilliard.
Both of the Hawks points in the 5-2 loss to Rhode Island also came in singles play as freshman Meredith Heitland and sophomore Madeline Makings each scored victories at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Heitland earned her second-straight singles victory winning in three sets over the Rams Elizaveta Sadovnikova. After dropping the first set 6-4, Heitland pushed to a third set tie breaker with a 6-3 victory in the second set. She then posted a 1-0 (10-6) victory to earn the point.
Makings first point of the spring semester came at fifth singles. After needing a tiebreaker in her first set, 7-6 (7-5), Makings streaked to the victory with a 6-3 decision in the second set.
Also earning a singles point in the halted match against RPI was Schaar who also cruised to victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Amanda Alexander. Schaar and Long's win in doubles play was half of the point as Hartford opened up the match with a 1-0 lead. Joining them with a doubles victory was Emily Sneddon and Heitland who scored a 6-4 win over Alexander and Casey Olsen.
