Colgate Takes Matching Wins Over Hawks

The University of Hartford men's and women's tennis teams opened their 2016 spring seasons with 7-0 defeats at the hands of Colgate on Saturday afternoon.

"Regardless of the score, we played well today," head coach Torr Terranova said. "Colgate is just a great team all around. We got great results in doubles. The men always fight and have great attitudes across the board. The women made strides in terms of setting a baseline for what the spring can look like. We hope to learn from this going forward."

On the women's side, Meredith Heitland showed strong mettle at the No. 2 position, winning the first set 6-3 before falling 7-5 in the second and 7-6 in the third. The Hawks fell in straight sets at the remaining singles positions, despite a strong fight at No. 1 from Skyler Schaar. Schaar and Heitland fought to a 6-4 defeat at No. 1 doubles as well in defeat.

On the men's side, a 7-6 win for Colgate at No. 2 doubles over Dan Rombola/Luis Montes and a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Morgan White/Juan Molina gave Colgate the doubles point. In singles, Bryan Einstoss fought his way to a 7-6 win in the first set before falling in three. Colgate took the remaining five singles matches in straight sets.

The Hawks men are back in action on Tuesday against Boston College, while the women return to the court on Friday against UMBC.
