Tennis Programs Go 2-1 in Final Home Matches

The University of Hartford men's and women's tennis programs enjoyed a successful final day, as the teams combined to go 2-1 in the final home competitions in school history on Sunday. The men topped Franklin Pierce 4-3, while the women defeated FPC 7-0 while falling to Stonehill 4-3.

"This has been a remarkable year of learning," head coach Torr Terranova said. "It was so special being able to send off these upperclassmen with a win on their final day of competitive tennis at the University of Hartford. It is also great to know that other students will be able to continue their careers at other places."

The Hawks men started the day with a momentous, 4-3 win over the Ravens. Hartford took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 by Nick Sharwarko/Luis Montes and at No. 3 by Will Drumwright/Dan Rombola to take a 1-0 lead. Then in singles play, Hartford earned victories at No. 2 (Juan Molina), No. 3 (Montes) and No. 5 (Morgan White) in straight sets to clinch the victory. All nine team members competed for the Hawks, with seniors Montes and Sharwarko and junior Molina taking part in both singles and doubles.

On the women's side, the day started with a 7-0 defeat of Franklin Pierce. The Hawks swept the doubles with wins at No. 1 (Skyler Schaar/Karolina Pilip), No. 2 (Emily Sneddon/Hannah Goldman) and No. 3 (Gianna Sabino/Angela Sabino) to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Hawks then went on to win in straight sets in all six singles matches, with Schaar winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Sneddon winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2, Goldman winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, Meredith Heitland winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Gianna Sabino winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Angela Sabino winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.

In the afternoon, the women were topped in a close match by Stonehill, 4-3. The Skyhawks took the doubles point with close wins at all three positions. In singles, the Hawks got straight-set wins at No. 1 (Schaar – 6-2, 6-2), No. 3 (Heitland – 6-3, 6-2) and No. 5 (Gianna Sabino – 7-6, 6-0), but were topped at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6.

"I would like to thank all the athletics staff for making sure this was a great day for my student-athletes," Terranova said. "Lastly, I would like to thank Anton Goff for the opportunity to coach and build a program here. I know not only myself, but all the student-athletes, appreciate their time here and will miss this place."
