Luis Montes of the University of Hartford men's tennis team has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete Team, it was announced today.
Â
"This is a great accomplishment for Luis," Head Coach
Torr Terranova said. "He has worked incredibly hard throughout his time here and there is not a player on the team who deserves it more."
Â
Montes, a biomedical engineering major with a 3.52 GPA, has been a model example of a student-athlete in his time at the University. In addition to his success in the classroom, he has been an outstanding leader, serving as team captain for the squad amidst a tough season for the program.
Â
On the court, he was hampered by injuries in his sophomore and junior seasons. This year, he went 2-10 in singles matches and 2-11 in doubles. Before getting injured, the Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, native went 1-3 in singles as a sophomore and 2-3 in doubles. He also posted a 5-19 record in both singles and doubles as a freshman.
Â
Montes and his Hartford teammates enter the MVC Tournament on Friday at noon, where the seventh-seeded Hawks will take on No. 2 Southern Illinois in the opening round of the event.
