Baseball Names Carmody and Florence as Team Captains For 2021 Season

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford baseball team named senior Robert Carmody and redshirt senior Nathan Florence team captains for the 2021 season, head coach Justin Blood announced on Monday.

"I'm really happy for Rob and Nate to get the opportunity to lead together," Blood said. "I've seen them go through struggles, make mistakes and ultimately grow into two of the most respected members of our program."

Carmody, a Canton, Mass., native and two-time captain, tallied five hits in Hartford's 12 games last season. He finished the 2019 season ranked third on the team in putouts (181) and second in fielding percentage (.995). Named to the America East Honor Roll in 2017 and 2020, the senior also recorded career highs in batting average, slugging percentage, runs, hits, and RBIs during the 2019 campaign.

Florence, a Wilbraham, Mass., native, made three starts during the Hawks' abbreviated 2020 season, registering 12 strikeouts in 14.2 innings. Before missing the 2019 season due to injury, Florence last pitched in 2018 when he earned America East Second Team honors. In 2018, Florence made a program-record 15 starts and led the America East with 93 strikeouts, which is the second-most strikeouts in a season in program history.

"Rob is now a two-time captain and our vocal and emotional leader while Nate leads more by example," Blood said. "Nate brings a consistent, quiet but disciplined approach to his daily work. They are our yin and yang of leadership."
