Women's Soccer Downs Delaware State on Opening Day

DOVER, Del. — Five different players found the back of the net Thursday as the Hartford women's soccer team coasted past Delaware State, 5-0, in its season opener at Alumni Stadium. Redshirt-senior Andrea Carina Costa Garcia scored the game winner in the opening stanza before the Hawks put the Hornets away with five second-half tallies.

Hartford improves to 1-0-0 on the season, while Delaware State falls to 0-1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Garcia got the offense going for Hartford in the 13th minute, when she converted on a feed from graduate student Saige Bingman and scored from 30 yards out to give Hartford a lead it would not relinquish. The Hawks were dominant in that opening stanza, holding the Hornets to just one shot attempt to take the one-goal advantage into the break.

The Hawks put the match out of reach midway through the second half, scoring four times within a 10-minute stretch to go up, 5-0. Sophomore Imani Jenkins ignited the flurry, using passes from Garcia and classmate Chloe Layne to score from point-blank range at the 71:50 mark. The lead quickly grew to 3-0 just 82 seconds later, when sophomore Kelly Severini scored on Bingman's second helper of the game.

A long strike on an open net from sophomore May Cervone pushed the advantage to 4-0 in the 80th minute, before sophomore Christina Stone set up senior Taylor Brown to round out the scoring barrage 18 seconds later.
