Wolk leads with glove, bat in DH sweep

The University of Hartford softball team tallied 16 total runs in sweeping Eastern Connecticut State Sunday in a doubleheader at the Hartford Softball Field.

GAME ONE: HARTFORD 7, EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE 2

Caylee English was exceptional in the circle, allowing just an infield hit over five innings with seven strikeouts as Hartford claimed the opener.

East Conn had its best opportunity against English in the third inning as the Warriors opened the frame with a walk and hit batter. A sacrifice bunt and another hit batter loaded the bases. The senior took matters into her own hands in getting out of danger with back-to-back strikeouts, one looking and the other swinging.

The Hawks took the early lead with three consecutive walks and a wild pitch. Another walk loaded the bases again, but Hartford didn’t push another run across the board. Olivia Wolk homered with two outs in the second for another run.

Hartford tacked on individual runs in the fourth and fifth innings on RBI singles by Emily Coffey and Neveah Terrell.

The visitors got on the board with two runs in the sixth, however, the Hawks answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. An infield single by Kelsey Galevich scored Wolk, and then Shailynn Williams doubled home a pair of runs in scoring Samantha Nagel and Galevich.

Wolk scored a career-high four runs while tying her career high with three hits – going 3-for-3 with a double, home run, and RBI.

GAME TWO: HARTFORD 9, ECSU 1 (5 innings)

Hartford scored all nine of its runs, including five in the fifth, over the final three innings to complete the sweep with the 9-1 run-ruled victory.

Seven of the starters registered a hit, including four with multiple knocks, as the Hawks finished with 12 hits on the game.

Williams started the fifth with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a single by Mara Sczecienski, who stole second. Galevich drew a walk to load the bases to set the stage.

Carly Mayhood singled home Williams, and then Sczecienski raced home on a fielder’s choice to make it 6-1. Anita Farkash get the momentum going with an RBI double to score Mayhood, and then Neveah Terrell brought home Nagel to a sacrifice fly. The game came to an abrupt end as Sarah Serrano doubled home Farkash.

An error in the top of the third inning enabled ECSU to take the lead. But, it didn’t last long.

Serrano opened the third with a single, stole second and came home on a Wolk RBI double. Hartford pushed three more runs across the plate in the fourth inning on a RBI single from Farkash, a RBI single by Serrano and a ECSU throwing error.

For the second straight start, Mayhood was great in the circle with a complete game – allowing zero earned runs. She surrendered five hits over five innings with two strikeouts.
