ECAC Semi-Final Preview: No.1 Hartford vs. No. 4 NJCU

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team hosts the 2024 ECAC Tournament this Saturday when they take on New Jersey City University at 11:00 AM in the semi-finals. 

No. 1 University of Hartford Hawks (14-3-2, 7-1-1 CNE)
No. 4 New Jersey City University Gothic Knights (7-5-8, 2-4-3 NJAC)


Game Headlines:

Hartford will host its first ECAC tournament game. The last time these two teams faced off was in the ECAC semifinals hosted in New Jersey where the Hawks took the crown in a 7-2 win on November 11th that advanced them to the finals.

Hartford Headlines:

  • The Hawks ended their season as first-time CNE champions in their dominating 6-0 win over Gordon College on November 9th. Hartford has defended the home field well this season with a record of 7-2-1 on Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium.

  • The team is led by multiple offensive stars. Graduate student Imani Jenkins (Middletown, Conn.) leads the Hawks with 24 goals just in the 2024  season. Jenkins set the school record for most goals scored at 61 surpassing the previous holder of 60 goals in their career, Jenkins since then has tabbed 16 more goals running beyond the record to a total of 77. Graduate student Christina Stone (Glastonbury, Conn.) also has had a record-breaking season and is a now program record holder for career assists, she claimed the title at 34 and is now sitting at an impressive 48 assists. She also brought home 17 goals this season alone. Sophomore Kathleen Brush (Wethersfield, Conn.) has also been the one to watch this season scoring 12 of Hartford's goals and eight assists. 

  • Defensively junior Lindsey Metcalfe (Palos Verde, Calif.) has held the defensive line strong playing 1649 minutes this season. Metcalfe is joined by senior Juiliana Chiarella (Hampden, Mass.) graduate student May Cervone (Milford, Conn.), sophomore Mia Mangalji (Toronto, Ontario), and junior Andrea Buzas (Wethersfield, Conn.) all making key contributions to the success of this team.

  • In net, junior Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.) has been solid all season making 35 saves this year for Hawks along with 11 shutouts in her 18 game starts.

  • The Hawks averaged 3.37 goals per game while allowing .58 goals against.


New Jersey City University Headlines:

  • The Gothic Knights defeated #5 Juniata College in the first round of the ECAC Tournament November 16th in a 2-1 battle, goals scored by Beatriz Oliviera and Kyanah-Belle Jean-Louis.

  • Kim Brites leads the Gothic Knights offense with eight goals and three assists in her 18 games this season. The next top scorer for the team is Arianna Chavez bringing in six goals for New Jersey City. 

  • In net for the Gothic Knights is Sophia Mannino making 91 saves bringing her save average to 0.820% for the 2024 season.

  • As a team the Golden Knights scored 2.00 goals per game just allowing 1.00 goal.

 

All-Time Against New Jersey City University:

  • Hartford owns a 1-0 record over New Jersey City University with a 7-2 win last November. Jenkins nabbed four of the seven goals in this match, Stone, Cervone, and junior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.) took one goal a piece. 

  • For the Gothic Knights,Nyrohah Alvaranga and Ari Flores-Ortiz were the players to put numbers on the board in this match-up

  • In net, Hartford's Johnson put up eight saves for the Hawks to hold their 7-2 lead and sent them into the finals.
