Nationals Preview: Murphy Making History This Weekend for Hartford Track & Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - This weekend junior Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) is set to make more history in her well-accomplished career as she will compete at the NCAA DIII Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex. Murphy who won the Division III New England Champion in the pentathlon earning a meet-record score of 3559, will be taking on the gauntlet on Friday before competing once again in her featured event high jump on Saturday.

Murphy is one of the most exciting and dependable track & field athletes going into the NCAA Championship weekend. She is going into the biggest meet of her season with both momentum and expectations. Hartford Track & Field Head Coach Connor Green said, "As the season goes on, we introduce situations that allow her to experience high-level competition, which ultimately prepares her for this meet. She has worked incredibly hard and ultimately it's about enjoying the experience!" As the Hawks' lone qualifier, she represents the program nationally with a combination of competitiveness, consistency, and the kind of late-season form that indicates she's reaching her prime at the perfect moment. "My goal is to compete with confidence", said Murphy. "My focus is to embrace the moment and give my best effort. I want to push myself against some of the best athletes in Division III and represent UHart with pride."

Murphy's year has been built on consistent improvement. She states, "I have been planning for this meet by staying consistent and disciplined with my training. My mindset going in is to trust all the work I have put in." She has earned a well-earned spot at the nationals thanks to her accomplishments during the indoor season, which have regularly placed her among the top Division III athletes in her event groups. Murphy ranks fifth in the nation in the high jump competition with a 1.73 meter qualifier. In pentathlon is sixth with the 3559 score. The track & field program continues to reach new heights as Jordan was named one of 12 Hawks to receive U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-East All-Region honors and it is only fitting that Murphy will get the first chance for Hartford on the national stage.

For Murphy, this meet serves as both a reward for months of focused training and a chance to solidify her status as one of the best in the country. For Hartford, her attendance at the NCAA Division III Championship demonstrates the significance of a student-athlete who has grown to be a foundation of the Hawks Track & Field identity as well as the program's competitive ascent. "It is a great feeling seeing the hard work that Jordan has put in has paid off," said Green. "We want the best for our student-athletes, so when their goals are met, it just makes it even more rewarding." Jordan will be the first female to compete at the indoor track & field nationals in school history.
