Hawks Softball Fall to Roger Williams in Doubleheader

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford Softball team competed against Roger Williams University in a double-header this Sunday, falling in both with a first game score of 8-5 and second 5-0.

Rapid Recap Game 1 (L, 8-5):

  • The Hawks and the Hawks of RWU opened game one in a defensive battle, with neither side able to push a run across through the first inning. RWU would strike first in the second, capitalizing on a Hartford error and stringing together a pair of RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead.
  • RWU kept the momentum rolling in the third, plating five runs on six hits taking advantage of another Hartford mishap to extend the lead ot 7-0. Hartford offense struggling to find an answer early, held hitless through the first three innings.
  • Hartford began to chip away in the fourth inning as senior Anita Farkash (Seaford, N.Y.) launched a two-run homer to get the Hawks on the board. Later in the frame, freshman Priya Bedard (Medway, Mass.) delivered a bases-clearing triple to bring Hartford within three at 7-4 and shift the momentum.
  • After a pair of quiet innings, RWU added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 8-4. Hartford threatened in the seventh, as sophomore Katrina Baran (Townsend, Del.) brought in a run on a sacrifice blunt, but the comeback would fall short as Roger Williams held on for an 8-5 victory.

In the Circle:

  • Junior Gracie Hopkins (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) got the start, going three innings and allowing seven runs, five earned, on ten hits while striking out four.
  • Sophomore Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.) provided strong relief out of the bullpen, tossing three innings while allowing just one run on no hits, striking out six and walking two.

At the Plate:

  • Farkash led the offense with a two-run home run, two RBIs, with her three at-bats.. Bedard added a bases clearing triple, driving in three runs for the Hawks.

Rapid Recap Game 2 (L, 5-0):

  • Game two opened as a pitcher's duel, with both Hawks held scoreless through the first three innings as neither offense could find a rhythm early. 
  • RWU broke through in the fourth inning, using a pair of hits to plate three runs and take control of the game. A two-RBI single followed by another RBI knock game the team a 3-0 advantage.
  • The RWU Hawks added to their lead in the fifth, capitalizing on a triple to right field that brought in two more runs pushing their lead to 5-0. Hartford continued to search for answers at the plate but struggled to generate offense, managing just one base runner over the final three innings.
  • The Hartford Hawks threatened in the seventh after drawing a lead off walk, but a double play quickly halted any momentum as Roger Williams secured the 5-0 win to take game two.

In the Circle:

  • Senior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) tossed 5.2 innings while allowing five runs on six hits, striking out three and walking four. Zobel made a brief appearance in relief, recording one out while allowing no hits or runs 

At the Plate:

  • Hartford was held without a hit in game two as the Hawks were limited to just one base runner on a walk.
