FAIRFIELD, CT - The University of Hartford lacrosse team snapped its 10-game losing streak with a commanding 18-9 victory at Sacred Heart University on Wednesday afternoon.
Ten different players scored goals for the Hawks, led by a career-high four tallies from junior Tom Harris. Seniors Tim Chisholm (3 goals) and Josh Wasson-McQuigge (2 goals, 1 assist) and junior Jason Whitehouse (2 goals, 2 assists) also had multiple-goal games for Hartford (3-11 overall).
Sophomore Brendan Mulligan's first career goal gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the opening seconds and they never looked back. After Sacred Heart tied the game 30 seconds later, Harris scored back-to-back goals to put Hartford up for good.
Hartford led 4-2 after the first quarter and 8-4 at the half. The Hawks closed the first half with three straight goals in the final 6:16 and then opened the second half with three more tallies. Whitehouse picked up both of his goals in the stretch.
The Hawks pumped the lead to as many as nine in the second half. Chisholm scored all three of his goals in the stanza while sophomore Brian Tilley added a pair. Seniors Shaun Kiviat and John Waterman also scored their first goals of the season for the Hawks.
Hartford scored three times on extra-man opportunities and outshot Sacred Heart 45-40. Freshman Jon McMahon made 15 saves in goal to pick up his second win of the season.
Hartford will close out the 2006 season at home on Saturday, April 29 against the University of Vermont. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Al-Marzook Field.
