Baseball Reveals Incoming Recruiting Class

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Head coach Jeff Calcaterra and the Hartford baseball team announced on Monday the commitment of 11 players during the early signing period. The recruits, who will join the Hawks for the 2011-12 academic year, bolster the team in many areas, particularly on the mound and in the outfield.

“The staff and I are truly excited that these young men have made the decision to become a part of our baseball program and the University community here at Hartford,” Coach Calcaterra commented. “This year's signing class is a direct result of the efforts put forth by our staff, specifically my assistant Coach [Jerry] Shank. We had identified specific needs for the 2012 recruiting class as we will lose eight seniors in the outfield, infield and on the mound this year. We feel we have added very talented players with specific skill sets. More importantly, they all bring a high level of character, passion and commitment for baseball and academics which will help our program flourish in all areas.”

PETER ANSELMO
6'5” Right-Handed Pitcher (Bats: Right)
Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow High School

Peter Anselmo

The tallest member of his high school class, Peter Anselmo has played four years of baseball and two of basketball at Ludlow High School. With his American Legion team last year, Anselmo appeared in seven games, going 4-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 32 innings. He struck out 22, featuring three pitches that he throws for strikes. Coach Calcaterra on Anselmo: “Peter is a big-bodied pitcher who comes to us from Ludlow High School and Coach Martin Fanning. With his frame and arm delivery, we feel Peter has a very high ceiling. He has two off-speed pitches that compliment his mid-eighties fastball. He is already a strike thrower and projects to increase his velocity as he matures, which should allow him to come in and compete for innings in his first year. We look forward to his growth over his career and the contributions he will make to our ball club.”

Hear from Anselmo: “I chose Hartford because it is a perfect fit in regards to my major and my desire to play college baseball. I look forward to, hopefully, spending seven years at UH earning my Doctor of Physical Therapy. I will work as hard as possible in order to maximize my potential and help the team win.”

He is a very talented athlete who we feel has many tools. He is a big-bodied player who can run, throw and swing the bat. He can play all three spots in the outfield and we feel he can develop into a middle-of-the-order type of hitter. He brings a winning attitude and leadership to the game and plays on a premier summer program, the South Florida Bandits. We expect great things from Teddy in his career and feel he will make our program better.”
