Baseball Swept in Doubleheader with Yale

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -
The Hartford baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader with Yale on Saturday, 10-0 and 17-5. The Hawks (3-6) came into the game with a potent offense through the first week of the season, but were held to just five hits over two games on Saturday.

Brook Hart went the distance earning the win for Yale in Game One. Cory Beahm took the loss for Hartford. Vinny Lally started and got the win in Game Two, with Hawk starter Anthony Mannuccia taking the loss.

The Hawks touched Hart for just two hits in the first game. Sophomore Andrew Siano led the first inning off with a sharp single back through the middle. He stole second and third base, but Hart struck out the next three batters to elude the threat. Rodger Wilmot stroked a one-out double in the second and also moved up to third base, but could make it no further.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs scored twice in the second, three times in the third and five more in the fourth to give Hart all the support he would need.

The second game saw the Bulldogs jump out to another big lead early. Designated hitter Andy Megee slammed a two-run home run in the first inning, and Yale would add another run before the end of the frame. Yale added two in the third and seven in a fourth inning which saw them send 14 men to the plate.

For the Hawks, the offense was once again held without many hits in Game Two, but they took advantage of Lally's wildness to score three runs in the third inning with the benefit of just one hit. After junior Simon Kudernatsch reached on an error, Lally walked four straight Hawks before Bobby Gorski laced a single up the middle to score a third run.

In the fourth, pinch-hitter Jason Freethey led off by drawing a walk, and Rodger Wilmot followed with a double to the gap in right-center. Two batters later, Andy Drexel roped a double down the left field line, plating both runners.

It was too little, too late, though, as Yale had built up too large an advantage for the Hawks to overcome.

Hartford now will prepare for a stretch of five games in four days starting Tuesday at Boston College. The Hawks will ultimately play eight games in eight days. Six of the contests will be at home, including a single game with Fairfield on Thursday, doubleheaders with Fairfield on Friday and Harvard on Sunday, and a single game with Connecticut next Monday.
