ORONO, Maine - The Hartford baseball team was swept in its doubleheader at Maine on Saturday. The Hawks dropped the first game 14-7 before falling in the nightcap, 4-1. Victor Santana had three RBIs on the day and scored a run in the first game. Steve Sobocinski took the loss in Game One, while Mike Thatcher got the decision for Hartford in Game Two.

Hartford got off to a quick start in Game One, scoring twice in the first and three more in the second to stake themselves to a 5-1 lead. After Santana was hit by a pitch and Mike Aldrich walked, Jared Canney drove in Santana with the game's first run. Aldrich would later score on an error by the Black Bears' catcher. Then in the second, the first five Hawks to come to the plate reached base, with Santana forcing in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Later, Matt Walker laced a double down the left field line, scoring Cory Beahm and Andrew Siano.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Maine proved just as adept at moving runners around the diamond, scoring at least once in all six of its at bats. A five-run fifth inning proved too much for Hartford to overcome, and while Santana added another RBI in the sixth and Beahm scored on an error, the Hawks were outdone, 14-7.

In the second game, Mike Thatcher gave the Hawks the quality start that they needed, going seven innings and allowing just four earned runs. Thatcher struck out three and allowed just two hits over his last three innings of work. However, just as Hartford found a pitcher who proved capable of cooling the Black Bear bats, their own bats went silent.

The Hawks managed just one run in the second game. Adam Sobiewski was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth, and after Alex Bulger singled him up to second base, Santana once again came through with an RBI single, a liner into right field.

Hartford wraps up its three game series in Orono on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks and Black Bears will play a single game, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
