Box Score
WORCESTER, Mass. - Zach Tarner pitched six strong innings in his second start of the season. Unfortunately for the Hartford baseball team, the seventh inning proved to be his undoing as the Hawks fell at Holy Cross, 6-3.
Andrew Siano had two hits and scored a run in the loss.
Hartford got on the board in the first inning. After a day off against Connecticut on Monday, junior
Andy Drexel stroked a two-out double to right field. Junior
Mike Aldrich followed by smacking a single to right that plated Drexel with the game's first run.
Holy Cross would tie it in the bottom of the first and take the lead in the second, but the Hawks drew back even with a run in the fourth. With one out,
Matt Walker ripped a double to deep center field. He moved up to third moments later on a passed ball, and scored when
Rodger Wilmot sent a sacrifice fly out to center field.
Hartford reclaimed the lead in the fifth, once again getting things started with two outs. Siano lined a single up the middle and promptly stole his second bag of the game. With a runner in scoring position, senior
Mike Amendola delivered, finding the hole between short and third to bring Siano around to score.
That would be all the scoring Hartford would push across. With the score still 3-2 Hawks, Holy Cross mounted a one-out rally in the seventh that would eventually plate four runs, all charged to Tarner. The inning was capped by a three-run triple off the bat of Steve Tkowski.
Hartford has the rest of the week off, before welcoming UMBC in to Fiondella Field on Saturday for a doubleheader to open up America East play. The Hawks and Retrievers will get underway at noon, and will play another noon doubleheader on Sunday. Tickets are available by calling 860-768-HAWK. They can also be purchased at the gate.
