WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -
The Hartford baseball team fell behind in the first inning of both ends of its doubleheader with Binghamton on Saturday, and could not recover in either game. The Hawks fell to the Bearcats, 4-1 and 26-8. Hartford starters Mike Thatcher and Steve Sobocinski took the losses. Binghamton's James Giulietti and Mike Augliera earned the victories. Rodger Wilmot had four hits on the day, including three in the second game.

Freshman Anthony Mannuccia pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief to close out Game One for the Hawks.

Binghamton hit seven home runs in the second game en route to a 26-8 victory.

Hartford got its first hit of Game One in the fifth inning when Mike Aldrich led off with a single. In the seventh, with Binghamton already ahead 4-0, the Hawks got on the board. Mike Amendola singled to right and moved up to second base on a passed ball. With two outs, Wilmot hit a liner into shallow center that Binghamton's Henry Dunn dove for but could not corral. The ball scooted by him, allowing Wilmot a double and sending Amendola home with Hartford's first run.

Binghamton jumped all over Sobocinski in Game Two, scoring three in the first and eight more - four of which were charged to Sobocinski - in the second.

Hartford got on the board in their half of the second inning and scored two more in the fifth. Wilmot and freshman Erik Figueredo keyed that rally with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. After Bobby Gorski walked to load the bases, Cory Beahm plated Wilmot with a single. Andrew Siano then rolled a grounder deep in the hole between first and second base. Beam was out at second on the force play, but Siano was safe at first and Figueredo scored.

The Hawks scored twice more in the seventh on RBIs from Gorski and Jon Ricco. They added three in the eighth thanks to some sloppy defensive play by Binghamton and another big hit from Figueredo, this one plating Andrew Barry.

Hartford and Binghamton will square off for another doubleheader on Sunday. The Hawks and Bearcats will get underway at Fiondella Field at noon. Tickets are still available by calling 860-768-HAWK. They can also be purchased at the gate.
