Baseball Swept in Four-Game Set at Stony Brook

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - In its second-to-last weekend of the season, the Hartford baseball team was swept in a four-game set at Stony Brook. The Hawks dropped both ends of its doubleheader on Sunday, 18-5 and 6-4.

Jason Freethey drove in three runs in the first game, as Chris Greiner took the loss. Matt Walker slammed a two-run homer in Game Two, but Vincent Fiore took the decision for the Hawks.

The Hawks' offense got off to a strong start in the first game, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Cory Beahm and Mike Amendola drew back-to-back one-out walks, and after Walker beat out an infield single to load the bases, Freethey drew the third Hartford free pass of the inning, forcing Beahm to the plate. Bobby Gorski followed with a single to right field that plated Amendola and Walker.

Unfortunately, Stony Brook stormed right back, scoring five times in the bottom of the first and four more in both the second and third innings. In fact, the Seawolves scored at least one run in every inning of the seven-inning contest, running away and hiding with an 18-5 win. Walker doubled and scored on a Freethey single in the fifth inning, and Freethey's sacrifice fly drove in Amendola in the seventh, but it was not enough to keep up with the potent Seawolves offense.

Stony Brook took a 3-0 lead in the second game, but the Hawks were able to come back and tie things up in the fourth inning. With one out, Amendola reached when center fielder Tanner Nivens misplayed his drive to center. The senior scored moments later when Andy Drexel laced a triple over Nivens' head and all the way to the center field wall.

With Drexel on third, Walker stepped up and continued his hot hitting day with a blast to left field, his second home run of the year to tie the score at three.

Stony Brook answered back with two runs in the fifth inning, and although the Hawks got a run back in the seventh when Freethey drove in his fourth run of the day, the Seawolves added an insurance run in their half of the seventh to wrap up the sweep.

Hartford will play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday when they visit the Rhode Island Rams. The Hawks will then conclude their year with a three-game set at Albany next weekend.
