WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - In its final home games of the season, the Hartford baseball team fell to Maine on Sunday in both ends of a doubleheader, 10-3 and 12-4.
Andrew Siano scored three runs and knocked a triple on the game, as
Mike Thatcher and
Vincent Fiore took the losses for the Hawks. Prior to the first game, head coach Jeff Calcaterra and the Hawks honored their four seniors -
Mike Amendola,
Jon Ricco,
Bob Rogers and
Zach Tarner - in the annual Senior Day ceremony.
For a second consecutive day, Siano was a spark plug at the top of the order, scoring twice in his first two times at bat in Game One. In fact, during the series, the Black Bears could not retire Siano until his eighth at bat of the series. Prior to that, Siano reached safely seven times, scoring six runs.
On Sunday, however, Siano's two runs were the only Hartford could muster through the first five innings of the first game. Meanwhile, Maine had scored three in each of the first two innings, adding a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to chase starter
Mike Thatcher.
Anthony Mannuccia and senior
Bob Rogers did a strong job out of the bullpen, but it was too late for Hartford as they could not mount a comeback, falling 10-3.
The story was much the same in Game Two, as Maine jumped out to a big lead and did not look back. The Black Bears scored in seven of the first eight innings, and at one point held an 8-0 lead before Hartford scored single tallies in the final four frames. Siano led off the sixth with a soaring triple to right field. He scored the Hawks' first run on an RBI groundout by
Victor Santana.
Matt Walker had two hits in Game Two, the only Hawk to record more than a single base knock. Walker singled twice, coming around to scores in the seventh inning on an RBI single by
Cory Beahm.
There is a possibility that the Hawks will have one more game left at Fiondella Field this season, as their earlier game against Dartmouth has not yet been rescheduled. The Big Green had to postpone their trip due to a rescheduled Ivy League game, and they may come back to West Hartford later this week to get the game in. Check back to HartfordHawks.com for more information on if and when that game will be played.
The Hawks' next scheduled game will be Saturday, when they visit Stony Brook to begin a four-game set against the Seawolves. Hartford will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday against the Seawolves, with both twin bills set to get underway at noon.
