BALTIMORE - The Hartford men's and women's tennis teams opened their spring break week with a trip down I-95 to Baltimore, where they took on America East rival UMBC as well as Coppin State and Loyola (Md.). Although the Hawks fell at UMBC and Loyola, both teams scored convincing victories in the team's matches over the weekend at Coppin State. The men won 6-1, while the women did not cede so much as a game to the Eagles in grabbing a 7-0 decision.
After both teams fell to the Retrievers by 7-0 margins to open the trip on Friday, the Hawks traveled across town to take on the Coppin State Eagles on Saturday morning. The women got things started with two perfect 8-0 doubles decisions, won by
Katina Zampas and
Maggie Sabatino at No. 1 doubles, and
Kaitlin Lennon and
Haley Gileau at the second spot. Having already lost the doubles point, the Eagles defaulted at No. 3 doubles, giving the victory to
Nicole Haynal and
Emily Willhoft.
Singles play was all Hartford, as all six performers notched perfect 6-0, 6-0 victories. Zampas played at the top of the Hartford ladder, followed by Sabatino, Haynal, Lennon, Willhoft and Gileau.
The victory was the first of the spring for the Hawks, and improved their record to 3-5 overall during 2010-11. After falling 7-0 at Loyola to conclude the trip on Monday, Hartford sits at 3-6 overall.
On the men's side, the Hawks once again jumped out to a quick lead in the doubles point and wrapped it up early.
Aneil Bhalla and
Josh Isaacson grabbed an 8-3 decision at No. 1 doubles, while
Marco Neves and Joel de los Santos won 8-0 at No. 2. The point already won, Coppin State once again conceded the third match, officially won by
Bogdan Nedelcu and
Filip Miletic.
Coppin State got on the board at No. 1 singles, where James Jeffreys knocked off Joel de los Santos, 6-3, 6-0. There would be no comeback, however, as the Hawks stormed out and took the other five singles matches. Edgardo Ureta battled to a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) triumph at No. 2 singles, while Miletic cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3.
Conner Masciotra won his first collegiate match at No. 4 singles, a perfect 6-0, 6-0 decision. The match decided,
Eric Floum and Nedelcu were each awarded their singles matches by default.
The men's victory was also their first of the spring, and their fourth victory of the year overall. They now sit at 4-6, dropping their match at Loyola on Monday by a 5-2 count. Aneil Bhalla's 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles and Marco Neves' 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles provided the scoring for the Hawks.
Both teams can now enjoy the remainder of their spring break, as the Hawks will not be back in action for a week-and-a-half. The women visit Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. on March 24, while the men will return to the courts two days later when they take on St. Francis (Pa.) at a neutral site in New Jersey.
