Abby Liu continued her solid play for the University of Hartford women's tennis team, picking up a singles match win in the Hawks' 6-1 loss on the road against Manhattan at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., on Sunday afternoon.
Liu ran her singles record to 13-3 in a Hartford uniform and 2-1 this Spring with her win over Manhattan's Lili Johnson. Playing at the No. 1 position, Liu took the first set, 6-3, and was leading, 3-0, in the second set when Johnson retired from the match. The win was Liu's second straight singles victory after picking up a point for the Hawks against UMBC February 11.
Sophomore
Katina Zampas battled in her match at No. 3 singles against Caitlin Bricketto. Zampas pushed the first set to a tiebreak before eventually dropping the set, 7-6(4). The second set was similarly contested, going to 12 games before Bricketto pulled out a 7-5 decision in the set to take the match.
In the No. 2 slot, sophomore
Ashley Harel kept her match close, falling, 6-3, 6-4, to Hilary Valenzuela. Harel also teamed with freshman
Christie Greenberg in the closest doubles match of the afternoon. Playing in the No. 3 spot, Harel and Greenberg dropped an 8-4 decision to the Jasper team of Stephanie Tsao and Catherine Clark.
The Hawks take to the road again next week when they go up against Bryant in Smithfield, R.I., on Saturday, March 3.
