Box Score NEWARK, Del. - In the final game of the Delaware Invitational, the University of Hartford fell short of St. Francis (PA) on Sunday morning as it fell 2-0. The Hawks finished the tournament with a 1-4 mark and are 5-13 on the season.
Senior
Melani Maxwell led Hartford with two hits while
Jordan Haines,
Jackie Kelly and
Peyton Fisher rounded out the Hawks' hitting. Junior transfer
Zuzana Kudernatschova suffered the loss, allowing a pair of runs on two hits. For the Red Flash, Ketarah DeVries threw seven innings, striking out six batters in the shutout.
On two occasions, the Hawks had runners in scoring position, but they were unable to scratch any runs across home plate. In the top half of the second, Haines earned a one-out walk and Kelly doubled in the ensuing at-bat. Hartford fell short of reaching the scoreboard, however, as
Sawyer Fried and
Erica Phelps were each forced into infield ground-outs.
It was a similar situation for Hartford in the top of the sixth stanza as it stranded two Hawks on the corners. With two outs, Maxwell looped a double to left field and Haines singled down the middle of the infield. The threat was silenced, though, as DeVries induced Kelly into a ground-out to get out of the jam.
Kudernatschova kept the Red Flash off the scoreboard for four innings. With two outs, Thomas walked and Parsons singled. That base hit proved to be costly for Hartford as both runners would cross home plate as a result of back-to-back fielding errors by the Hawks.
Hartford kicks off a five-game homestand on Thursday when it hosts the University of Rhode Island Rams for a doubleheader. The Hawks' home debut is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
